Launch of MeteoGlobal project

The Portuguese Institute of Meteorology recently launched the METEOGLOBAL project, included in the celebrations of the World Meteorological Day and the 65th annyversary of the National Weather Service. With this project, the Institute of Meteorology aims to increase its interaction with the amateur meteorological community in Portugal.

Citizens’ interest for weather and climate has been increasing, being usual nowadays the acquisition of common observation systems by individuals and the monitoring of the evolution of weather phenomena through the exchange of information in real time, by groups of concerned citizens taking advantage of the advances in communication systems that facilitate the establishment of associative processes between more or less organized groups.

It is facing this reality that the Institute of Meteorology, IP decided to create a page designated by MeteoGlobal (with implementation in terms of development and integration under the responsibility of Eurotux) accessible via its website, to improve its responsiveness, particularly in the following of extreme phenomena with short temporal and spatial scale, with the support of the voluntary contribution of citizens in weather and climate monitoring.

MeteoGlobal will thus allow any citizen to report, in near real time, the occurrence of severe weather phenomena that they may testify, by filling out a short form. This information will be received immediately at the Center for Analysis and Forecast of IM, IP, for use and knowledge of the meteorologists responsible for monitoring weather conditions and will also be available through the website to all citizens.
