Last May 11, the Portuguese Foundry Association (APF) held the XIX National Foundry Congress, at Torre da Oliva, in S. João da Madeira, under the theme Foundry: Future and Challenges.

The congress addressed the current problems faced by the sector, its positioning in an economy that increasingly aims to be sustainable, in addition to the usual technical issues that are intended to be innovative.

Ricardo Oliveira, Consulting Services Director at Eurotux, was one of the guests at the congress and was present as a speaker in the Digitalisation panel, with a presentation entitled “Cybersecurity: National Overview”. In his intervention, Ricardo had the opportunity to talk about cybersecurity risks and conflicts in the years 2020, 2021 and early 2022 and how these were marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the urgent need to move to remote or hybrid working models, there was also, by force of circumstance, a mobilisation in the digitalisation of business processes. However, we see that this modernisation was largely carried out without the fundamental participation of the cybersecurity area, either in the prior assessment of risks and determination of measures to deal with them, or already during the two long years in which organisations worked on this new model. As a result, cybersecurity incidents with a significant impact on organisations in Portugal increased considerably, taking advantage of the weaknesses inherent to the lack of maturity in these digitalisation processes and often centred on the biggest source of cybersecurity weaknesses: the employee.

Eurotux’s Consulting Services Director also had the opportunity to outline a Portuguese national panorama in terms of cybersecurity incidents, main attack vectors and guidelines to increase organisations’ resilience, taking into consideration the incremental consequences of these incidents.

Eurotux formally began the ISO27001 certification process, contemplating the scope of its traditional services. With the beginning of the implementation process and subsequent implementation, Eurotux takes another step towards the adoption of the standard and international reference for information security management.

The company has already implemented a series of Policies and Norms which guarantee compliance with this standard. Besides, it has a maintenance plan for several controls of the standard regarding its own organization, in a leap of maturity verified in recent years.

In addition, Eurotux already provides its customers with a Maintenance Plan which includes technical activities aligned with this international standard, which greatly benefits the quality, resilience and security of its customers’ services, platforms and data.

ISO 27001 has been continuously improved over the years and is derived from a previous set of standards, namely ISO 27001 and BS7799 (British Standards). Its origin actually goes back to a document published in 1992 by a British government department setting out a code of practice on Information Security management. The general principle of the standard is the adoption by the organisation of a set of requirements, processes and controls with the purpose of mitigating and adequately managing the organisation’s risk.

The ”Peers” of an ISO 27001 certified entity, namely your customers, suppliers and partners, also gain from the interaction with the certified organization. A major concern these days is confidence in the proper handling of your organisation’s sensitive information. The implementation of ISO 27001 ensures a high commitment to information protection, which represents a considerable level of comfort for organisations interacting with the certified entity. This way, customers, partners and suppliers of this entity know that their organization’s information will be treated according to high standards of management and protection in terms of Information Security, since the certified company was audited by an external and idoneous entity.

Eurotux has now decided, since the organization is already familiar and accustomed to these practices, to proceed with the formalization of the certification process.

]]>
Eurotux has reinforced its security offer with Sophos’ Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) solution.

The Braga-based company offers its customers this solution from Sophos, which complies with the principles of zero trust: trust nothing, check everything. Individual users and devices become their own micro-segmented perimeter, constantly validated and verified. With the ZTNA solution, users are no longer “on the network” with all the implicit trust and access that are normally inherent to it. This framework facilitates for example the management of a geographically dispersed team and the dispersion of equipment – as happens in work-at-home or remote work situations in general. It is also available in the cloud and managed and integrated with Sophos Central, the cloud management and reporting platform of this manufacturer.

With Eurotux’s solution, companies can manage the ZTNA from the cloud, anywhere, on any device, as well as integrate it quickly with other Sophos products, such as Endpoint, Firewall, Wireless, Mobile, Server solutions, and more. In addition, they have access to an overview of application activity and security posture from a single dashboard.

While VPN solutions enable democratised protected remote access to all enterprise network resources, the ZTNA solution ensures an access privilege policy per application, thus guaranteeing that certain functions only access the application resources they actually need and adding an additional layer of security.

The advantages of ZTNA

Eurotux identifies several advantages of using ZTNA solutions, specifically when compared to an access based approach with VPN. Among the main advantages, we highlight the following:

Suitable for remote working: ZTNA solutions are a simple solution for managing remote access for employees working from home. It makes deployment and enrolment easier and more flexible, replacing the complexity of using a VPN with something much less resource intensive. It is also more transparent and simpler for the user working remotely.

Designed for segmented access: Unlike VPN access, which traditionally grants company staff access to the entire network, ZTNA is designed to grant segmented access to specific applications. After all, a member of the marketing team doesn’t need access to financial platforms in the first place, right?

Enables application segmentation: ZTNA solutions provide enhanced application security through micro-segmentation, the integration of device “health” status into access policies, continuous authentication verification and the elimination of the lateral movement inherent in VPN use.

Prevents ransomware propagation: ZTNA solutions eliminate an attack vector common to ransomware and other network infiltration attacks. Since ZTNA users are no longer “on the network”, threats that could otherwise be propagated via VPN have nowhere to go with ZTNA.

Simple onboarding of new applications and users: ZTNA enables better security and more agility in rapidly changing environments, characterised with scenarios where users move in and out of the network. You can quickly and securely install new applications, enroll or disenroll users and devices, and get information about application status and usage.

Ricardo Oliveira, Consulting Services Director at Eurotux

Ricardo Oliveira, Consulting Services Director at Eurotux, explains that “traditional remote access through VPN often transmits a false sense of security at a time when companies have their workforce totally or partially working remotely. The Sophos ZTNA solution now available from Eurotux provides an additional layer of security and is easily integrated with other security tools to ensure maximum levels of protection for users, applications and data“.

Eurotux is available 24 hours a day to respond to incidents, contemplating density of skills and seniority with experience and availability to – when necessary – move technical resources around the world.

The company bases its approach on its many years of experience dealing with cybersecurity incidents

The year 2022, despite being at the beginning, has already shown us that security should be one of the fundamental concerns for any company, regardless of its size, as proven by the recent attacks on Portuguese and global companies. When the threat has already materialized in an intrusion, it is fundamental to count on experienced teams to accelerate recovery.

In recent years, Eurotux has been involved in the response/resolution of multiple cybersecurity incidents in national and international organizations, contemplating not only the allocation of specialized technical resources with considerable skill density, but also the coordination of activities and taking advantage of adequate procedures to support organizations affected by cybersecurity incidents. With the new threats that have become known in recent weeks, Eurotux has reinforced its risk mitigation strategy.

In addition to allocating – physically or remotely – the necessary resources, skills and seniority to quickly respond to cybersecurity incidents, accumulated experience has provided Eurotux with the necessary arguments for a quick and efficient response. We are talking about procedures, coordination capacity, priority definition and management, monitoring and execution of recovery tasks and extension of internal teams from the affected organization with both infrastructure and application skills.

Attacks damage companies’ business

Small and medium-sized businesses are increasingly becoming targets for cyberattacks. This is because they are seen as an easy target – they may not have the same level of security measures as larger companies, and may not have the resources to recover quickly from an attack that compromises the integrity of their systems. Key consequences of successful attacks include:

  • Financial loss
  • Damage to the company’s reputation
  • Loss of customer confidence
  • Compromised data
  • System downtime
  • Interrupted business operations

Organisations need to take steps to protect themselves and respond to cyber-attacks. They should ensure that their IT systems are secure and should have procedures in place to deal with the event of a cyber-attack. Importance also added to the awareness of their employees, who must be aware of the dangers of cyber-attacks and how they should protect themselves.

Ricardo Oliveira, Consulting Services Director at Eurotux

Ricardo Oliveira, Consulting Services Director at Eurotux, explains that “at a time when cyberthreats make the headlines, organizations must ensure they have the appropriate tools and skills to quickly respond to even the most advanced techniques of system invasion. Eurotux has different competencies and teams for these needs and we are prepared to help companies face the challenges imposed by the current cybersecurity scenario“.

Eurotux has increased the scope of its solutions with the incorporation of Sophos’ new range of enterprise switches. The multinational company launched in late 2021 a range of network asset products to address and protect its organization’s IT infrastructure.

Sophos now provides its portfolio with enterprise-class network switch equipment to provide your infrastructure with a secure network layer, integrated with other Sophos solutions and easily managed in the cloud through Sophos Central.

The Sophos portfolio is now enhanced with switch devices ranging from 8 to 48 ports, multi-gigabit ethernet speeds and 1Gb[SFP] or 10Gb [SFP+] uplinks. PoE needs are satisfied on models that can provide up to 410W or 740W. Integrating your organisation’s network switch appliances into Sophos Central along with Sophos XGS firewall and Intercept X will enable the protection of your infrastructure to extend to the network layer by ensuring that traffic and data flowing through it are now properly visible and analysed by active security layers.

Sophos switches provide local management via web, CLI and can also be integrated into the cloud management provided by Sophos Central. They support SNMP protocol to be integrated with your preferred monitoring solution.

Deployment of Sophos network switches is greatly facilitated and streamlined by their centralised management and Zero Touch, which allows their configuration to be set in advance, then simply enter your serial number into Sophos Central to register the switch and automatically activate the settings set, making them also the perfect equipment for your remote delegations or teleworking environments.

Eurotux renewed in 2021 its cybersecurity portfolio with Sophos XDR and MTR solutions and the XGS series Firewall and now includes in its offer this enterprise switches solution especially designed to protect data traffic in organizations’ internal network.

Jorge Paiva, Eurotux’s Commercial Director

According to Jorge Paiva, Eurotux’s Commercial Director, “Sophos’ new release allows for a truly integrated and centralized ecosystem, increasing security and facilitating network management. With this offer we can ensure an additional layer of security in our customers’ corporate networks and guarantee more and better protection for the most important asset in their infrastructures – their business data”.

Are you going to renew your company’s IT park? Learn about the main advantages of adopting a cloud model

Cloud migration is the process that typically refers to the transfer of infrastructure that is on-premises to the cloud. Each cloud migration process is unique, as is each company. The complexity of the migration depends on what is intended: one can migrate as-is infrastructure or native cloud services such as enterprise applications, web/mobile applications, IoT, edge servers, CRM support systems, productivity software, enterprise databases, remote desktops, SD-WAN, network administration tools, legacy systems, among other examples.

Types of Cloud

You can generically choose three different strategies for implementing solutions in a cloud, according to what makes most sense for each workload:

• Public cloud: This model makes cloud services available to the public via the Internet and available to anyone who wants to use them. Customers pay for the use of computing and memory, storage or bandwidth as well as any other services they wish to consume (hence, “pay per use”).

  • Private cloud: Unlike the public cloud, this involves the deployment of a flexible infrastructure but within an organisation’s network and is primarily intended to serve the organisation rather than the general public.
  • Hybrid Cloud: This model is a mix of on-premises infrastructure complemented by public cloud. Large enterprises typically use it to hold important data in private services and various services geared towards public support in the public component, making it possible to use public cloud capacity when justified (e.g. to meet a sporadic need).

Cloud Migration Advantages

Depending on the model chosen, the advantages may vary, but the truth is that we can define five major advantages inherent in the adoption of a cloud model.

1. Security

The cloud can be more secure than traditional network systems since it consists of systems, networks and applications that must be configured and maintained securely, following the model of “shared responsibility”. On the other hand, if services are in a cloud, all users (both the anonymous public and employees of your organisation) are external; as such, you eliminate the security distortion that exists in much internal infrastructure by relying on users in the internal network by default.

Almost 94% of SMEs appreciate the increased security the cloud provides, according to a Microsoft Office 365 survey. The service provider is still often responsible for the most difficult security issues, such as keeping unwanted traffic out of a specific scope of access to the machines where your business data and applications reside, and ensuring that automatic security updates are applied to systems to prevent them from being vulnerable to the latest known security threats.

2. Scalability

Moving to the cloud means that the business has a greater ability to scale services and applications based on its IT requirements. An IT solution that was ideal for one year may be obsolete a few years later, making it difficult for businesses to adapt to changing customer requirements. By migrating to the cloud, organisations have the ability to dramatically reshape their infrastructure to accommodate today’s needs without being locked into the size, specific versions or configurations active in the past. The cloud gives the power to control resources based on individual and business needs.

This ability to easily change infrastructure allows technologies to be aligned with the business, enabling innovation and flexibility. For many companies, this is the most important benefit of migrating to the cloud.

3. Cost

By making the move to the cloud, you may be able to control operational costs considerably improves IT processes. The cloud model also means you only pay for what you use, with no need to maintain expensive data centres when important information is hosted in the cloud. 82% of SMEs report reduced costs as a result of adopting cloud technology and 70% are reinvesting the money saved back into their business, according to the Microsoft Office 365 survey.  A ZDNet study on IT budget forecasting indicates that CIOs are increasingly turning to cloud infrastructure and services in order to increase flexibility and ease pressure on budgets.

4. Integrate

Moving to the cloud allows you to connect systems and applications to improve the efficiency of all services. Did you know that 59% of SMEs report increased productivity from the cloud? Over time, increased load and decreased efficiency are felt in the internal datacentre, just as they are with any asset. Traditionally, a business using a data centre would have to perform a periodic infrastructure upgrade to keep its data centre software and hardware up to date and running properly. This is a costly, time-consuming and always repetitive task that takes up time and resources. Enterprises can instead migrate applications to the cloud at the end of a hardware refresh cycle. There, hardware and software updates are carried out by the service provider, saving money and time, and ensuring that applications are always supported by the most up-to-date infrastructure.

5. Ease of access

Because all data is stored in the cloud, it is available no matter what happens to your physical infrastructure. Migrating to the cloud also means that members of an organisation can access the data they need from anywhere in the world, without device type limitations. This scenario opens up opportunities for the business to grow and expand while meeting operational needs.

Many cloud services can also provide monitoring of business critical applications and equipment. Being notified when an outage happens or an application has problems can dramatically speed up incident handling.

Backup services are also extremely important, especially if you need to recover from a failure and analyse where problems occurred. Backups will allow you to get everything back up and running, and logs can provide some critical information to help you figure out what caused the problem in the first place. After a cloud migration, IT staff won’t need to be in one specific location to deploy, upgrade or fix problems on any of the machines being used.

There are several benefits when it comes to migrating to the cloud, both for the enterprise business and for its customers. In most scenarios, successful migration reduces costs, improves scalability and significantly reduces the risk of a cyber-incident which could jeopardize the business. Eurotux is prepared to accompany you on this digital transformation journey, providing consulting and implementation services to make your migration a success. Each company has its own needs and goals, so Eurotux develops cloud implementation solutions adjusted to each organization’s specific framework.

The Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro Hospital Center will start the process for the election of the Workers’ Representative to integrate the Advisory Council. The EPE, as it is also known, is made up of four hospital units: the S. Pedro Hospital in Vila Real, where the head office is located, the Chaves District Hospital in Chaves, the Lamego Proximity Hospital in Lamego and the Palliative Care Unit in Vila Pouca de Aguiar.

The importance of electoral security and fraud prevention led the EPE to choose the eVoto electronic voting solution from the Eurotux Group, which is based on the platform developed for the University of Minho, evotUM. This system is faster and more efficient, with full auditability guarantees. Furthermore, it provides results in real time.

The new system was developed by Eurotux Group and uses an electronic voting process which will make the voting process less susceptible to fraudulent practices. Eurotux’s electronic voting solution is applicable to any electoral process and brings added security and reliability to processes which are sometimes lengthy and logistically complicated.

eVoto, the electronic voting solution

eVotUM was created with open source technologies such as Django, with which Dipcode has extensive experience and know-how. The development team paid special attention to security and availability, ensuring, among other things, the anonymity, confidentiality, integrity, auditability and security of the electronic vote.

Voters can vote securely and confidentially from any computer with Internet access, and integrations with multiple authentication methods are available for both the Electoral Commission and voters, such as directory services or the Mobile Digital Key.

The electoral process supported by Eurotux’s solution will take place on January 19th.
