This award distinguishes the company which presented the highest sales of the multinational cybersecurity company’s solutions in Portugal during the period between April 1st, 2020 and March 30th, 2021, which represents Sophos’ fiscal year. This distinction does not imply any type of application. The companies are selected directly by IAPMEI and Turismo de Portugal from the PME Líder universe until October 15th last year.

To be eligible for the PME Excelência award, companies must meet a series of demanding financial criteria cumulatively. A financial autonomy of equity of 37.5% or more, a net return on equity of 12.5% or more, EBITDA of 10% or more and a rating of 5 or less are just some of the tight assessment criteria.

These numbers refer to the entire Eurotux group. The web development company Dipcode – one of the group’s subsidiaries and majority owned by Eurotux – was responsible for the largest growth since its creation, with a turnover of over half a million euros and a net result of almost 110 thousand euros. This performance witnesses a growth of 17% year-on-year in 2019.

Central to the 15% growth last year was the success of the IT services business sector, namely in areas such as DevOps and Managed Services. These areas were two of the biggest driving forces behind the company’s business growth and the increase in business was due to higher demand from companies in the market and the advertising investment Eurotux carried out in 2020.

A year with many changes

António Coutinho, Eurotux’s CEO, explains that “2020 was a year which forced many changes at a personal and professional level, and which proved particularly demanding for national companies. The infrastructure was built with two IBM Power servers and one shared storage, running in an AIX 5.3 environment. However this OS was no longer supported in more recent hardware.

Therefore, with the limitations associated with its end-of-life (EOL) and considering the need for having technical support by the manufacturer, the project would be made to proceed with the infrastructure’s update.

The task of migrating applications running in AIX 5.3 environment to a new AIX 7.2 environment was very well handled because the applications are not directly supported in the AIX 7.2 environment.

In order to overcome this technical challenge (first seen as impossible), Eurotux contacted the support of IBM’s sole distributor, Arrow, and together found the solution, which was the creation of a WPAR (workload partition) to emule the old system, creating a image of this system and hosting it in this WPAR.

Also developed by Eurotux, a specific backup script could enable the advantages of having a new Tape Library, specially having an optimized capacity of the LTO7 tapes, better than the previously used technology.

In conclusion, there is now a consistent infrastructure, technologically updated and suitable for the client’s needs.

It has been observed that traditional piracy, of falsified products, keygen and cracks, has lost space for a somewhat more subtle practice. The purchase and sale of software keys by unauthorized persons is an illicit practice and can also bring harmful consequences.

First of all, it is essential to have the understanding that the purchase or possession of the activation key or serial numbers does not mean the acquisition of the license and rights of use. Often these sellers forge or steal the key, hence it is a practice of piracy.

In this article we will make known the risks of installing pirated software or buying software keys by unauthorized persons.

1 – Risk of malware infection

The installation and usage of unlicensed or pirated software can bring serious risks to the security of your organization’s IT infrastructure.

Many of these programs are outdated, or even have limitations on future upgrades, and this can be a serious problem as hackers can exploit your vulnerabilities.

For the installation and use of software to be legitimate, the purchase of a license must be made, not only the single activation key.

4 – Low performance or application blockage

Hardly a counterfeit pirated software will have the same performance as the same original product, considering that it can be updated with patches that guarantee security and good functioning. As we have seen pirated software can contain malware, and this can slow down the machine where it was installed.

For those who buy the key from unauthorized vendors, according to Microsoft the risk is that “the key may not work for activation, already be in use on another PC or be blocked for use later by Microsoft when the theft is reported.

5 – Lack of technical support

Another major disadvantage of using pirated or counterfeit software is the lack of technical assistance offered by manufacturers. This means that in case of doubt or unknown errors, the user will not have specialized help or technical support.

How to protect your company

According to Microsoft, the user should be cautious of too low a prices, or when offers are found on auction site listings, online classified ads or on another page advertising product keys for sale.

Maintaining the dialogue with customers, employees, shareholders and all stakeholders is extremely important to Eurotux. Due to the pandemic, which made it impossible, for example, to hold face-to-face events, and the need for physical distance, the company decided to increase the investments and reinforcement in digital channels.

An unprecedented advertising campaign, which promoted the company as a player in Digital Transformation took place in May. Eurotux was on television, radio and some major national portals as many could see.

Before launching the advertising campaign, Eurotux modernized its main digital channel, dividing the old site into three new sites: the main one for services, another institutional one for the group and a specific one for providing infrastructure and solutions.

In order to educate employees of partner companies about information security, an eBook was published, which can be read or downloaded in portuguese as a pdf from the company’ main website. Another channel that received reinforcement was the social networks, where news and technical information of interest to the followers are being shared.

2020 was definitely an atypical year. Despite the adversity of the pandemic, the company managed to maintain the quality of its services, the virtual conviviality of the team and its sustained growth.

February was a festive month in the company, for the celebration of Eurotux’s 20th anniversary which occurred almost simultaneously with the inauguration of the new facilities. In March, however, the beginning of the pandemic in Portugal forced 80% of employees to leave the office and adopt remote work.

Even though the employees were working from home most of the year, in such a difficult year, Eurotux managed to maintain normality in the provision of its technical services and the realization of projects with excellence. Among the several national clients we can mention Casa das Lâmpadas, Agribar, IPCA and Fersil. The international project that stood out was that of DevOps (CI/CD) in the United Kingdom.

In May Eurotux was on television and radio with an advertising campaign, which also involved large national portals. This initiative generated great visibility for the company at national level.

In this year that ends, Eurotux once again obtained recognition for the quality of its services, having renewed the ISO 9001:2015 certification for the sixth consecutive year, and being recognized by PME Líder 2020 for another consecutive year.

In the meantime, control theory strategies have been applied to technology, namely observability, in which the adequacy of a system’s internal states is determined based on its output results; as such, we change the behavior from reactive to alarms to proactive based on metrics observation, often obtained based on the crossing of several data sources that are typically system, application and service records (logs).

It is possible to implement metric-based alerts, just as in traditional monitoring it is possible to trigger alerts based on state changes (available to unavailable, etc). Eurotux teams have used Stack ELK with excellent results for analysis and correlation of records from any source, in any format, and which allows to search, analyze and view data in real time, being an excellent alternative to some commercial solutions.

What is the ELK Stack?

“ELK” is the acronym for three open source projects: Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana. Elasticsearch is a search and analysis engine. Logstash is a server-side data processing pipeline that takes data from numerous sources simultaneously, transforms it, and sends it to a “hideout” like Elasticsearch. Kibana allows users to view data with diagrams and graphs on Elasticsearch.

Another more recent alternative is Open Distro, also Open-Source, and sponsored by AWS. Both Stack ELK and OpenDistro are highly customizable and have a number of advanced capabilities such as alarming.
