Open source added value in the current economic context
Adherence to open source is also one of the objectives proposed in the Global Strategic Plan for the Rationalization and Cost Reduction in Information and Communication Technologies, where the Portuguese Government looks at the “rationalization of ICT’s investments and management in Portugal, allowing, on the one hand a very significant cost reduction and, secondly, a not less relevant efficiency gain”.
Cost reduction up to 70%
has no licensing costs, allows for “achieving a savings of 50% to 70% on
most software purchases
In the case of the Portuguese State, and according to ESOP, the adoption of open source software, since it has no licensing costs, allows for “achieving a savings of 50% to 70% on most software purchases” which, based on 2010 data, represents a reduction in software costs by at least 80 million Euros/year.
Eurotux already has extensive experience in open source solutions targeted to the public sector. For example, projects developed for Câmara Municipal de Barcelos, Porto e Maia, for Instituto de Meteorologia, Agência para a Modernização Administrativa, Universidade do Minho, Universidade Fernando Pessoa, Instituto Politécnico do Porto, among others.
