HPC for Data Analytics at the CIBIO
The CIBIO/ICETA (Research Centre for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources), the research unit for Biological Sciences at the University of Porto, purchased, with the support of European funding (Horizon 2020, grant n. 641762), an IBM Power system S812LC for computational calculation.
This infrastructure considerably amplifies the data processing capacity for the ECOPOTENTIAL research project, with a special focus on its geospatial component. This platform allows you to increment the volume of processed data, and accelerate modelling processes based on advanced techniques of statistical analysis and machine learning. Specifically, the system’s high capacity of parallelizing tasks, allows for superior performance in several analysis tasks, such as producing evaluations and projections of tendencies and biodiversity dynamics, and allowing you to process high volumes of satellite images in applications for modelling and monitoring ecosystems.
The IBM Power S812LC is a high performance system, in rack format, designed to run Linux Operating systems, and incorporating a Power 8 Cores @ 3.32Ghz, with 32 GB of RAM, 2 local disks of 1 TB SATA, 4 Ethernet ports, and redundant power sources.
With collaboration established between the CIBIO/ICETA and the I3S (Health Research and Innovation Institute of the University of Porto), the machine was physically installed at the I3S’s new facilities.
