IPMA uses Eurotux’s infrastructure monitoring, support, and maintenance service
IPMA, I. P. is the state laboratory whose mission is to promote and coordinate scientific research, technological development, innovation, and service provision in the field of the sea and the atmosphere. The organization ensures the implementation of national strategies and policies within its areas of activity, contributing to economic and social development. It carries out its work in the fields of meteorology, aeronautical meteorology, climate, seismology, and geomagnetism. It currently has approximately 600 employees across the mainland territory and the Azores and Madeira archipelagos.
Challenge
IPMA faced a scenario characterized by outdated infrastructure that was ineffective for addressing contemporary technological issues and that acted as a constraint on its activity. This infrastructure was also unable to keep up with technological trends and did not support the implementation of new technologies. The partnership with Eurotux is long-standing and fruitful. It began in 2007 with this infrastructure management, and was later extended to software development. The most pressing problem was the swift and adequate detection of and response to incidents, as well as the maintenance of the infrastructure supporting IPMA’s Web platform.
In this area, the great challenge was to “safeguard the high availability of the institutional website of what was then IM, using open source technologies, which for several years remained the most visited Public Administration website in Portugal“, as noted by Ricardo Deus, from IPMA’s Climate and Climate Change Division.
Solution
Eurotux’s services helped ensure the high availability of IPMA’s web platform, which had already been the most visited Public Administration website in Portugal for several years. The company implemented and keeps active an infrastructure monitoring, support, and maintenance service with 24×7 coverage, and has also taken part in several infrastructure realignment and reinforcement projects.
In addition, Eurotux carried out the development of application solutions, always based on open source, related to virtual infrastructure management, an e-learning platform, a survey application, a corporate intranet, and a collaborative platform in the field of meteorology and seismology, which have now transitioned to DipCode, a company within the Eurotux group.
Result
According to Ricardo Deus, from IPMA, “the number of incidents at the infrastructure layer has decreased“. This was due to Eurotux’s proactive maintenance plan. In addition, “service availability improved significantly, both in the technological infrastructure and in the application layer“.
Eurotux’s involvement also ensured greater capability building among IPMA’s human resources, who gained more skills to keep pace with innovation processes. Furthermore, the same manager states that “Eurotux has been a valuable partner in the full management of IT services for IPMA. The team always shows enormous commitment to improving the solutions, and the company has been successful in this regard“.
I believe that the commitment the Eurotux team showed in the past, and continues to show today, in pursuing improvement solutions for IPMA, has been the foundation of this win-win relationship between IPMA and the Braga-based company
